Danny Welbeck returned to the starting line-up with a bang

Arsenal’s forgotten forward Danny Welbeck returned to the starting line-up with a bang after scoring in the 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Table leader Leicester had recently claimed a high-profile scalp in the form of Manchester City at the Etihad stadium. This unlikely victory put them five points clear at the top of the table. They were able to take advantage of clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City being inconsistent this season. Even as early as last year, Leicester would have been favourites to get defeated even when being at home against a top team like Arsenal.

Now, though, they have been given enough chances of a victory at the Emirates stadium due to the recent form. However, the club suffered only their third league defeat of the season thanks to a late goal from Danny Welbeck. The former Manchester United forward was just returning from a long-term injury problem that had kept him out of action for the first half of the campaign. Despite making his first appearance of the season and spending only seven minutes on the pitch, he came up with a goal to defeat one of the main title rivals. Following the game, defender Per Mertesacker spoke about the importance of Welbeck in the business end of the campaign.

“We need players coming back. We had a lot of long-term injuries and that’s what gave us a bit of struggle in January because we played in December and then January with almost the same team.Players who gave us great energy stepped in but now we need other players to come back.We are happy to have Danny back and a few others are not far. We need all our players. In the end, that makes the difference. There’s more coming from other players as well,” said Mertesacker about the return of Welbeck.
